The Mountain Giant

The Mountain Giant | Personal Work

The biggest influence on my work and style are the cartoons and cartoon posters from the 1920's - 1940's. I have watched Fleischer Bros Betty Boop cartoons more times than I can remember. When I finally discovered these cartoons as a teenager I think the style felt new and wild. It's was a strong alternative to what I was seeing on tv and in theaters. Ever since then I've been in love with round sausage looking characters. So I wanted to do some work like those posters I love. The image above is from a doodle that I think was originally an idea for a client. Seemed like it was a good fit for a poster.

(Update: Giclée prints now available to purchase from Society 6.)

John Wyndham - Covers (personal work)

The Chrysalids | Personal Work

I'm a big fan of John Wyndham's books and I was feeling the urge to do my own covers to a few of my favorites. Sort of a dream job that I gave myself.

Golf Digest - Picking up the ball

Picking up the ball | Golf Digest

• In context

Contents page illustration and three smaller illustrations for Riva Schwartz at Golf Digest. Originally it was just the three smaller illustrations for the rules page, but we ended up taking one of the sketches for the spots and using it on the contents page. The rules I illustrated involved when it is OK to pick up your ball during a game. Working with Riva was a treat. These illustrations were a blast to create.

Cents Magazine - Recession Lessons

Recession lessons | Cents Magazine

Full-page illustration for Carrie Olivier at Cents Magazine for an article about smart financial habits during a recession. The writer talks about being on a financial diet and how not to throw it away and go back to an all-you-can-eat lifestyle. This gave me an interesting direction to go in and also an excuse to sketch a pig in a diner.

Kiwanis - Inner Child

Inner child | Kiwanis International

Cover, full-page and a spot illustration for a cover story about improving club meetings. The article includes ideas on making the meetings less tedious and boring and how to include a little humor. It was a pleasure to work with a fantastic art director, Andy Austin.

Down to a Trickle

Down to a trickle

Seems like everyone I know is talking about the decision by the CRTC in Canada that will impose usage-based billing, effectively forcing small service providers to charge a similar rate as the larger companies. Preventing them from offering unlimited data transfer. If a consumer wants to download music, movies or watch netflix they will be paying much more for it. Instead of a fast flow of data, many customers will find themselves paying penalties and a throttling of bandwidth.

I decided to create the image above to exercise my editorial skills while I have some time between assignments.
